Nabela’s Spicy Daal

Nabela's spicy take on her mother's daal recipe.


  1. Wash your red lentils several times. Drain the lentils.

  2. In a pot over medium heat, add the olive oil.

  3. Dice and add onion to pot. Add minced garlic if desired.

  4. Sauté until golden brown.

  5. Add ginger and garlic and let fry.

  6. Add 1/2 cup of water.

  7. Add turmeric, hot chili pepper, and curry powder.

  8. Cook until the heavy smell lessens.

  9. Add the lentils and mix.

  10. Add 4-5 cups of water, stir, and salt to taste. Add green chilis if desired.

  11. Cook until daal is soft and to your desired texture.

  12. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve over rice, with naan or with desired side. Makes a great dip for parties when made with thicker consistency!
